Congratulations! As you settle into your new home, you will face many joys of homeownership. When it comes to maintenance of your roof, however, we’ve got you covered.
While your inspection report said you still had some life in your roof, you want to extend that lifetime as long as you can. Below, see our recommendation outline for your roof’s maintenance.
Every Three Months:
- Remove loose debris from your roof, and clean out your gutters. In order to be gentle on your roofing granules, we recommend using an air blower to remove debris, then following up with a gutter cleaning. Be sure to remove large branches after storms, but wait until the roof is dry. Never climb a ladder in wet conditions, as roofing material and the ladder itself can be very slippery.
- Inspect your roof. Do you have any missing shingles? Exposed nails? Curling? Check out our blog, Five Signs You Need A New Roof, to keep an eye for common visuals that will help you to know when it is time to get your roof inspected.
- Check your attic. Be sure to keep an eye on your attic and other interior ceiling portions of your home that will indicate water leaking from the roof. With the potential to cause mold build up, if ignored, this could lead to a very expensive fix.
- Remove algae and moss from the roof. Again, avoiding power washers and bristled brushes that may remove the granules from your roof, find a soft, wide broom brush, pushing the moss off at a 30 degree angle. We recommend moss block spray as well, to kill the remaining moss and help take preventative action.
- Call for help. Several contractors offer roofing services, to increase the longevity of your roof. The steeper the pitch of the roof, the more strongly we would recommend calling for help. Always put your safety first.
